Who’s ready for some October story writing prompts? These could also be good ideas for the 2020 NanoWrimo coming up soon!
Writing prompts are meant to help inspire your own writing and for you to go on and elaborate on further more than the writing prompts given and into a story of your own. The details are for you to wove in and the ending is for you to decide.
I haven’t made a story writing prompts in almost too long–like five months? Yet these are among one of the most popular posts on the blog, though I had began these from the my own love of writing. And my brain who can’t seem to stop imagining ideas after idea.
These October story writing prompts have some Halloween themed threaded in some if not most of the prompts. Or just some elements of spookiness for sure.
But nonetheless, that led to these lists of writing prompts that I’ll start creating monthly! Remember to follow the board of writing prompts for more and to get notified that it’s updated with fresh story prompt pins!
Let’s Start with these October story writing prompts :
1. They were a group of teenagers who went on a trip together to celebrate graduating from college. One of them never returned.
2. “You can’t replace her.” He shook his head and stroked his fingers chillingly across her face. “But you know what does work?”
3. On his birthday, he had made his last wish as a joke from the day before. It came true the next day and he regrets it. A lot.
4. You woke up from your surgery midway, and you blinked open to the doctor’s face and a knife looming right above you.
5. There was a new teacher in your school, and you had just discovered the biggest secret of his.
6. “How can someone be as idiotic as you?” She scoffed. “It’s not called idiotic,” He corrected. “It’s called being a genius, sorry we have different definitions of words.”
7. You hated scarecrows ever since childhood from a horror film you can’t seem to forget, and you just saw the scarecrow turn its head towards you as you watched it from the window.
8. You climbed into the attic to find your old Halloween costumes, you did not expect what you found there.
9. You became the main character of your favorite horror film, only the plot line switched just a tiny bit.

10. You stared in disgust at the stuffed human doll that your dad just got you. “Dad, have you ever heard of the story of Annabelle?”
11. On the night of Halloween, there are 13 kids that gone missing and they were all said to be saw last at the last house down the street.
12. “What are you?” He glanced at the man who approached him in an oddly eerie costume. “I’m ________”
13. You opened your eyes to a looming ghost mask above your face, but you live alone and it’s not a prank.
14. The restaurant’s lights flickered back up and there was only you and four others standing in a midst of dead bodies.
15. You hid in the closet for a game of hide and seek, you accidentally fell asleep. And you woke up to the house abandoned and completely different. The calendar said 1935.
16. “Enjoy the candy!” She waved and saw the child’s eyes flickered red before he scrambled off. Maybe it was from seeing all those masks and maybe it’s not.
17. Write about two characters celebrating halloween on Earth, but two hundred years from now.
18. She whispered in his ear, “It’s funny how I’m dressed like an angel yet–” She stabbed him in his heart and wiped the blood from her face. “I don’t act like one.”
19. “You’re the cutest cat woman I’ve ever seen!” “Yeah, I can’t say the same.”

20. You took a look at the polaroid that you and your three friends took in your Halloween costumes and there was a fifth costume.
21. The candies that you left on your desk from trick-o-treating was gone, and there were tiny footprints the size of an eraser shred leading out the window.
22. “What are you, Harry Potter?” He snickered at her hat. “Well, no. But just for that you’re going to become a mouse soon, I’ll tell you that.”
23. The twins donned on themselves some girly doll-like clothes and walked down the streets. It’s time to scare some people.
24. The clown sat on the edge of the sidewalk waiting for business before a boy approached him. “Come with me.”
25. You were shoveling the heavy snow outside, but your shovel hit something soft, but big.
26. You just woke up from a coma, and your last memory was trick-o-treating from your best friend’s house.
27. “What are thos–” He squinted at the far distance before he was violently jerked by his companion. “What are yo–? Run!”

28. “What are you doing in your teenage years if you haven’t teepeed a house?” “I stayed a good kid.”
29. A clan of vampires went out during Halloween, except they’re dressed like werewolves. While the clan of werewolves were dressed like vampires.
30. You frowned as you held the hand of your kids walking down the street. It has been the fifth time that someone said, “Watch out for the yellow house” and they had just arrived at a yellow house.
31. “You lack stylistic choice of your costumes.” “And I don’t think you have one any better. You’ve been wearing that same devil costume for the last what? Three years?”
32. The kids around the block has been getting sick and the culprit led to one specific type of candy.
33. It’s Halloween, and it’s time for the witches to shine.
34. “I’m not an angel. I’m a fairy.” A girl with glistening skin stood in front of me. “And I need to borrow your memories.”
35. Fires burned aflame around you and a memory that you’ve suppressed for so long finally surfaced after fifteen years.
36. The merry go around spun as music began to play, only all the other equipments were closed. And there was someone sitting right on the black horse.
37. “Tsk tsk, the mortals these days.” He picked at my cape. “What is this poor quality sh*t? If you’re going to try, at least get it right. We don’t do cotton, we do silk.”
38. Your best friend held up his hands in defense, “Wait, I can exp–” “Is that bottles of blood you have on your desk there or is it paint for your costume? Please tell me it’s the latter.”
