Who’s ready for some more dystopian story writing prompts?
One of my first ever writing prompts post was fantasy : 36 Magical Fantasy Story Writing Prompts. And many enjoyed it, as I did too! Since fantasy is such a great and broad genre, I thought that I’d extend it to the dystopian genre!
I can’t be the only one who not only enjoys reading dystopian novels but also loves brainstorming up my own possible societies and how I would live in them? No? Just me? Probably not, so here are 42 dystopian story writing prompts for you to write AND imagine about haha!
Writing prompts are meant to help inspire your own writing and for you to go on and elaborate on further more than the writing prompts given and into a story of your own. The details are for you to wove in and the ending is for you to decide.

Let’s Start with these dystopian story writing prompts :
1. Your government adds a new law every century and a new law just passed. Under the new government that just took over in a rebellion.
2. There is a slum area in every section of the country. She was born in one of the worst slums in all 8 sections and she wants to leave. No matter the cost.
3. His tribe was near the brink of extinction under the pressure of the kingdom nearby. Until the kingdom offered an alliance for the simple price of the king himself as tribute.
4. A woman from our village has to be offered to the crown every year to the massive kingdom for protection. The crown is a woman.
5. He went to jail for the one law that should never be broken in his society. Be in contact with people of the outside.
6. In a world where everyone has black hair, she was born with white hair. There was a prophecy passed from centuries ago that someone with white hair will bring color to the world once again.
7. Everyone is branded with the number of days they have left to live. You were branded with zero. You were never supposed to be born.
8. You have a guardian angel just like everyone else. Except that your male guardian angel also has a brother who follows you as a guardian demon.
9. There was nothing left to hunt in the area she lives in and she’s the last young girl left in the tribe. Because she’s lived her whole life as a boy just to avoid being offered as tribute.
10. The government has been corrupt since centuries ago and today a messenger arrived at your door. All the governors of the 13 areas want you, the king of the slums, to be a part of their rebellion against the area-system.
11. The caste system has remained the same since forever, until the rebellion succeed. And the caste system is about to be reversed.
12. I nibbled at the bread he just handed me and offered him a chunk, “Are you not hungry? We’re probably the same age, you probably don’t get much food here either.” His eyes smiled, “Follow me, and I’ll make sure you’re not hungry ever again.”
13. There has never been a day since I was born had there been a clear sky. It has always been dark and gray. But I saw the blue sky before. Once. With him.

14. She was the princess. He was the one who led the revolt. He won. He stood before her, “Do you remember me? When we were five?”
15. The government has only consisted of women ever since the beginning. Tell the tale of the attempt of seven men trying to start a rebellion.
16. “You are the governor of our area! Do something!” I yelled at him. “I tried! You don’t think I tried? They—” He fell to the floor with a large bang as blood splattered onto my face.
17. You stood before the queen — whom you thought had wrecked havoc to your village for decades — as a frail girl who crumpled to the floor with whip marks all over her. “Please. Help me. It’s not me.”
18. Your entire society is under an illusion that all the magicians of the crown enforced for centuries. No one knows about it. But you do, because you were one of the magicians.
19. Babies were forced to drink a potion when they were born in this society. The ones who don’t survive it will die and the ones who do will go on to live. You were thought to be dead until someone saved you. The king did.
20. Every area has to pitch in five best kids of their area to the crown for the supposedly the best education and support. Little did anyone know that it was for an experiment that none of the kids had survived to tell the tale. Except you.
21. “There’s no room for change in my kingdom,” scoffed King Henry. “I’ll make room for it.” The magician’s eye twinkled.
22. All he ever known was the piles of ruin. He never knew there was so much beyond that until she brought him out of there.
23. Portals double as the highway in the society that you live in. There has always been trial runs for them, and you’ve just volunteered as testing for one of the longest portals made in history.
24. In a world where everyone wears a Japanese mask to hide their identity from the cameras. The cameras from the government that lie in every corner of the street.

25. They were all sitting in black robes together with one in white. Her eyes swept over the map laid out on the table, “it’s time for a change.”
26. When flying cars became common in 2550, you fell asleep at the wheel and drove to somewhere you’ve never seen before. Somewhere the government never wanted people to see.
27. People were dying by the masses each day, because water has now officially became more valuable than gold.
28. You live in a world where every sane person are kept in insane asylums, while every insane person roams free on the streets. You have a personality disorder, where one is insane and one is sane.
29. He thought he was the only survivor of the post apocalypse in his Area. Until he met her.
30. He knelt to her, “Help us all, please.” He raised his cold gray eyes to meet her glittering brown eyes. “I can do anything for you if you’re willing to save my people.”
31. It’s never been a government doing all of this like they all said. It’s someone. One single person has been enforcing this tyranny on us all.
32. You stepped on a journey with four other of tributes to enter in a competition for seeds to save your area’s land and forest. Only one from all 64 tributes will survive.
33. She crossed continents to escape from her forgotten society only to find three other societies suffering the same fate. And three other people with an equal will to find out what has truly happened to each of their own society.
34. There are only dam per section. And when your section’s dam dried up, you went to the mother section to find that every section’s dam are completely full. Your section is being considered for banishment.

35. Slums have been expanding faster than every in the recent years, and when the law banning slums was passed down with legal rights to kill those living in slums. More than half of the society is in danger, and you—a government official who was born in the slums—can make a change.
36. Only those with green, blue, gray, or brown eyes are allowed to survive in the society you live in. You were born with black eyes, you had stayed in your house most of your life until when you were 18. You met the castle’s magician, who is also born with black eyes.
37. “The Statue of what?” He frowned. “Where?” “The Statue of Liberty, in New York.” She repeated. “In New York? The only thing that comes to my mind as anything statue related is that giant green statue with a broken head that also doubles as a port that’s ten miles away.”
38. You woke up in your controller seat amongst a sea of the same seats with thousands of people asleep in them. You just woke up from a simulation that no one has ever managed to wake up from.
39. There is one dark valley that divides your city with the other. You went there one day to find a boy standing on the other side, staring right at you.
40. Earth is 70% land, and 30% water. The declaration of the seventh World War has just been announced yesterday between your neighboring nations for control of the sea.
41. Earth is 70% land, and 30% water. There are still 40% of the land that remains undiscovered, and you live in one of those undiscovered land as an highly established yet isolated society.
42. The world has not seen sunlight for centuries. With police patrolling everyday on the streets and flickering street signs on the often vacant roads, one leader rose up.
